Thrip Control using Soil-Dwelling Mites
Thrip Control using Soil-Dwelling Mites

These mites live and reproduce in and on the soil. This Immature and adult forms are all fierce predators. They live for about 13 days overall, and reproduce profusely. Ideal conditions for them are soil temperatures of 60-72 degrees F. They can live in wide variety of conditions, but cooler temperatures will slow their reproduction and development. H. miles mites are probably not appropriate for use on cacti or succulents in dry conditions. They have been used with especially good results in the production of Shiitake mushrooms. They work well in or outdoors, but may require multiple releases. Thrips only live in the soil for part of their life cycle, so soil-dwelling mites cannot eliminate them completely. They work well with other controlling agents, like the flower bugs we carry. Also, if you do use chemical pesticides, these mites will be partially protected from their effects by the soil. Containers of mites will keep for 2 weeks in a humid environment.
